Birdwatching for Beginners walks at Carsington
Water.
“Bird Watching for Beginners – 6th August 2017
What a great year 2017 has been so far. With
Carsington celebrating the silver jubilee of it’s opening
by the Queen in 1992, the birding volunteers added a
brand new bird hide in May with a generous bequest
from the late Janet Ede. The Janet Ede hide is at the
end of Stones Island adjacent to, and compliments, the
outdoor classroom run by Derbyshire WWT. This is a
great viewpoint for the deeper water and waters edge,
and our bird walks have been seeing some cracking
waders from the new hide.
Everyone is welcome to join any of our free 2-hour
walks, which include going round Stones Island, and
which are held on the first Sunday of every month. We
now reach our maximum of 22 people most months,
so you do need to book, on 01629 540696, or at
reception. We start from the visitor centre at 10.00am,
it’s wheel-chair friendly, and accompanied children are
welcome
Upcoming dates are Sundays- 6th August; 3rd
September 1st October and 5th November.

Cover photographer
Dave Clay, our front cover
photographer, a local Postie
often seen around the
Alfreton area, has had a love
for wildlife since childhood.
He’s also worked as a part
time Ranger for Derbyshire
County Council for over
thirty years.
Dave says: “I remember as a child chasing
butterflies in my Dad’s flower borders, cap in
hand and was pleased to win the best pressed
wild flower competition at junior school.
My fascination for butterflies and moths,
their habitat and food plants led me to take
a wider interest in local wildlife. Holidays
became an opportunity to explore and
understand different species and photograph
them.
The advent of Digital photography for me
was a revelation, now there is no waiting a
week or so, in frenzied anticipation for the
developed pictures to come back, only to
find out you missed the shot, or the exposure
was not all you had planned for. Results are
now instantaneous which allows me greater
freedom to share my pictures with a wider
audience.
I find my inspiration in the shapes, colours
and textures of the natural world, there is
always something new and exciting waiting
to be found if you know where to look !”
