I compliment Jackie on her glowing skin . “ Thank you ,” she beams and tells me how obsessed she is with skincare ( she ’ s been using The Body Shop ’ s Drops Of Light range , and confesses that she ’ s a big fan ). “ It has completely transformed my skin , you should try it . Oh , and sunscreen . It ’ s a must ,” Jackie adds , revealing that she swears by the Skin Defence Multi-Protection Essence SPF 50 ++++ by The Body Shop . And as Shaan is working a crazy , four-shade ombré lip on her (“ for fun ”), Jackie lets us in that she loves experimenting with make-up too .
As we chat further , I think to myself that it really isn ’ t normal for a celebrity to be this nice and friendly . But once you get talking to Jackie , you understand where she ’ s coming from . “ I ’ m not going to lie , it ’ s supertough to stay positive . Everyone ’ s so nasty all the time . And instead of it being taken as a good thing , it ’ s used against you ,” Jackie says , making a pertinent point .
“ And it ’ s growing because of social media .”
“ Don ’ t get me wrong ,” she continues , “ I love it . It ’ s a great platform to connect with fans , who genuinely love you and follow you , and would like to see that side of you . But it ’ s also your worst enemy ,” she adds in the same breath . “ And I ’ ve realised that many people on social media can be really thoughtless . They are just looking for an opportunity to troll you . And when you put so much information out there , you also put yourself at risk of attracting more negativity . But I guess it ’ s a part and parcel of being a celebrity ,” Jackie concludes in a matter-of-fact way .
When she started out , almost nine years ago , Jackie was invariably cast as an ingénue ... the pretty girl , whose job was to make a frame look good . “ Honestly , I knew nothing about acting back then ,” Jackie admits with a smile . “ But a lot has changed . The kind of slapstick cinema that was greatly appreciated then isn ’ t anymore . The audience ’ s preferences have changed . They look forward to more meaningful content . And even with actors , the kind of roles a lot of successful actors would pass for more commercial work have now turned into mainstream cinema ,” she says . About her own journey , Jackie admits to having made mistakes . “ I have been here for almost a decade , but a lot of learning has come in the recent past . It took me a really long time to acclimatize to the industry and understand its intricacies . And when you ’ re not from a film background , you have to learn from your own mistakes . You ’ re taking your own risks and at the end of the day , you need to face up to your own decisions . That ’ s why it took me that much longer ... but I ’ m ready to take more risks now .”
And those include well thought-out business investments . Few people know that Jacqueline Fernandez is an investor in RAW Pressery , a coldpressed juice company , and has opened two restaurants in partnership — Pali Thai in Mumbai and Kaema Sutra in Sri Lanka . She confesses to being a foodie and serves up some fitness tips when we ask her about the secret to her great body . “ I love that you think that , but there are days when I ’ m like ‘ I hate my arms ’ or ‘ My stomach isn ’ t flat enough ’. But it ’ s impossible to achieve perfection . And I think it boils down to the fact that one must love their body , no matter what . The only advice I ’ ll give is to not overexercise and go on extreme diets . Just eat in moderation , cut down on sugar , and be active .”
She might be open to experimenting , but the one area where Jackie wants to play safe is giving her opinion about anything . “ As much as I would like to speak openly about the things I feel strongly about , I can ’ t because everything is misconstrued . It has become such an issue . Like you can ’ t say anything even jokingly , because it might turn into a click-bait article . And it defeats the whole purpose . That ’ s why rather than talking about it , I like to do my bit in ways I feel comfortable ,” she shares .
With all this going on , does that leave any time for personal life , I ask ? “ I mean , it is difficult . Like I ’ m not grumbling — a lot of people think that being a celebrity is so cushy and one doesn ’ t need to do anything — but it ’ s not . I think , for your own sanity , it ’ s important to surround yourself with the right people . I like to meditate and read to separate myself from everything that ’ s going on and stay healthy . As much as we hear positive things about ourselves , and the love we receive ... there ’ s also a lot of negativity thrown our way . And small things can really affect you ,” she says .
And what ’ s up with her love life ? “ Umm , that ’ s something that has to happen organically . I don ’ t really think about it to be very honest . I don ’ t feel like ‘ Oh , I should be getting married ’ or ‘ Oh , I should be doing this or that ’. I feel like I want to work on myself more and that ’ s when I ’ ll attract the right person into my life ,” she smiles . n
