The Met Gala, also known as the Costume Institute Gala or the
Met Ball, is an annual fundraising event for the Metropolitan Mu-
seum of Art’s Costume Institute. The gala marks the opening of a
featured fashion exhibit by the Costume Institute. Anna Wintour,
editor-in-chief of Vogue, has been chair of the event since 1995
and is in charge of the benefit committee and guest list, which
includes 650-700 people a year. A theme is set each year for the
Costume Institute’s exhibition and the guests are expected to come
to the exhibit in fashions that match with the theme. The fashions

on the red carpet of the Met Gala are widely photographed and
reviewed. This year, the theme was Rei Kawakubo/Comme des
Garçons: Art of the In-Between. Rei Kawakubo is a legendary fash-
ion designer and founder of the label Comme des Garçons.
