How to Protect Your Hair
From Salt and Chlorine
With RemySoft
T
here’s nothing more refreshing than a swim
when it comes to the hotter months of the
year. Unfortunately, for those of us rocking
wigstensions, that dip can mean danger for
the quality and longevity of our hair. But don’t fret too
hard, with a little preventive care, you’ll be good to go.
Chlorine and salt water both cause extreme dryness,
and for those of us without natural oils to coat our locks,
that can be a real buzzkill. Not only can it mean that
your hair becomes more difficult to work with, but it
can shorten the overall lifespan by a significant amount.
Chemically speaking, chlorine in pools works to kill
bacteria and oils leftover from humans. For those of us
with natural hair in healthy, well hydrated condition a
short dip use will just require a little extra moisturiza-
tion to recover. But, for those with dry hair, damaged
hair, or wigstensions that don’t produce natural oil, it
takes planning.
For starters, you’ll want to plan ahead making sure
your routine starts with extra doses of hydration. To
learn more, we spoke with Michelle Ruggiero, manag-
ing partner of RemySoft, a hair care line originally de-
veloped for the hair replacement industry that’s gained
a major following with all consumers. “Salt is a big
problem, especially for those of us here in Orlando,”

Michelle explained adding that the care process is sim-
ilar to that of chlorine.
We asked Michelle how to plan your hair routine for
optimal protection on a hot summer day. “First, wash,
condition with hydrating products and let it air dry.
Then, add a serum. Now, before you go out, especially
in very humid climates (because the humidity can add
up to 15% in weight to your strands), you’ll want to
make sure the hair is very dry after using the serum.
You can use the serum on either wet or dry hair, but
you want to make sure that before they go out in the
sun that their hair is dry. The humidity is going to soak
right into the hair making it frizzy and making it even
more tangled.”
Once you arrive at your destination, add in a leave in
conditioner. Michelle recommends their Daily Refresh-
er. “I use it when I get out of the water,” she explained.
“It’s great for detangling and it’s got the bluemax, so
it’s got some extra protection in there and it keeps it
from drying out. Once you go in the chlorine or salt and
that sun hits, it it’s going to start fading your color and
drying out your hair. I always recommend if you have
to get your hair wet (option one, don’t get wet) but it
happens, as soon as you get out use the daily refresher
and try to get the protection back as soon as possible.
