J anine’s flagship salon in Los Angeles has been open for ten years, so when she opened the New York location, about a year ago, she needed to find a way to transfer her brand to the East Coast. A signa- 50 COSMOBIZ SALON JULY 2015 ture Gothic Lolita vintage style with pops of black and white and industrial elements, Janine told us that she “pretty much designed the whole thing.” Where does a hair stylist get the expertise needed to come up with her own interior design plans, you ask? Janine explains: “My dad owns an interior construction company, and my mom owns a consignment furniture store. So I’ve been around interiors my entire life, and it was really important to me that when I opened my salons that it felt more like a home as opposed to just like a sterile salon or stuffy salon.” The 1,500 square foot space in Manhattan (1333 Broadway) is home to 13 stylists who offer pretty much every type of hair and barbering service imaginable. On what makes the environment of her salon unique, Janine explains that, “It’s something we wanted to create from the very beginning—an ‘un-salon’ type of environment. There were just so many times through the years I’ve talked to different clients, different people, and a lot of people didn’t feel super comfortable going
