WINTER
FRIZZ
ust like how your skin gets dry and chapped in
winter, hair—both your own and added, needs
some extra love to cope with the cold. Not only
does the cold and wind itself affect the hair, but
the transition from cold air to hot air as you go in and
out stresses hair and can cause a variety of issues such
as frizz, split ends, dryness, and eventually damage.
Not only is it your own hair you need to worry about
but your extensions and wigs as well! Luckily for you,
we’re pulling together all kinds of information on how
to keep all of your hair on fleek this winter.
It may surprise you that winter may actually be the
most damaging season for hair. Sun exposure is amplified by reflecting snow, cold temperatures, wind, and
even increased dry indoor heat all take their toll in far
more serious ways than a little humidity. The cold and
wind tangle while drying hair out and making it brittle,
then indoors, dry heat leeches out any extra moisture.
When you combine that dryness and tangling with friction caused by extra layers and hats, you have a perfect
storm for damaged hair.

For What’s Growing out of Your Head:
Despite the extra stressors, dealing with winter hair
issues is actually quite straightforward; a huge part of
prevention is to make sure hair is adequately moisturized—a subject we’re covering in depth this month in
two other articles, Hair Strengthening on page 42 and
Scalp Salvation on 50. Without spending too much
extra time on the subject, keeping hair moist is one of
the keys to keeping it healthy and frizz free during the
winter. That said, there are several important and useful steps to take behind the hair mask and conditioning
treatment.
While women with curlier hair textures are no doubt
aware of the benefits of protective styles, they can benefit all hair types. We recommend taking a few days a
week to let hair rest by braiding it with some serum or a
lightweight, leave in moisturizer. This is a perfect way
to deal with second day hair, and it helps save it from
some of the harsh weather conditions!
