Remembering Aretha
“Be your own artist, and always be
confident in what you’re doing. If
you’re not going to be confident you
might as well not be doing it.”
March 25, 1942 – August 16, 2018
Instead of our usual letter from the editor, this month
I wanted to use this space to give a brief memoriam
to Aretha Franklin. Born in Memphis, Tennessee and
raised in Detroit, Michigan Franklin has been a beloved
household name since the late 1950s, when she worked
with Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.
While her later years saw Franklin suffering a variety
of health issues, it’s fair to say that the world was not
ready for her passing. Her legacy of activism in both
civil rights and women’s rights and her extreme and
impressive talent sealed her place in history and in our
hearts.
