serve our country. If there is anything we can do to now
serve them, we will be first in line.” And Derricott is
hopeful that the partnership won’t stop with Southern
California. He says, “As Makeovers That Matter
actually develops a comprehensive outreach, there are
113 Paul Mitchell schools nationally, so literally in
every state of our union where there are female veterans
who transition into the workforce we will, through
Makeovers That Matter, be able to provide them with
those basic services.”
We spoke with a veteran and her stylist at one of the
Southern California Paul Mitchell School who both
participated in the Mindset Program with MTM. Lilly,
a student at Paul Mitchell, told us what it was like to
make over a veteran: “Everybody came in, and I had
never met Karina before. She came in, and I spoke
to her and we hit it off. She kind of told me about the
program, and I start ed to feel really proud and honored
to be able to help her, and I shared with her my story
of how my brother’s in the military, and she was telling
me … how hard it was for her. Halfway through me
doing her makeover, in my heart I knew that I wanted to
do the best that I could for her because it was her day…
she deserved it.” Lilly gave Karina a trim and added
layers to her hair. “She kept telling me she wanted to
look like Farrah Fawcett, so I did my best,” said Lilly.
She also color balanced and toned Karina’s hair and
gave her a blow out.
Karina, a flightline mechanic in the Air Force
Reserves described her job in the service: “Pretty much
I fix airplanes. I fix the communication and navigation
systems.” She explained that going through the Mindset
Program really helped her return to a more normal
life. She told us that, along with the makeover, the
pole dancing class was one of her favorite parts of the
program: “I guess in the military I’ve learned to protect
my body and be very stiff and not to, you know, be who
I am when I’m not in the military, so this class just got
me to remind myself about that—I am a woman…
and that it’s safe, it’s alright, so that kind of brought
me back a little bit…just because I didn’t realize how
guarded I was.” She says it was little things like this
that really made the difference for her. “There are a lot
of resources, and a lot of people come by and offer their
support. I definitely recommend it,” says Karina.
If you’re a female veteran who’s looking for help, go
online to the website, makeoversthatmatter.com, click
apply, and fill out the application. For stylists, makeup
artists, or aestheticians interested in volunteering their
services, Derricott says, “Makeovers That Matter is
always looking for partners, volunteers, and corporate
sponsors to work with us so that we can provide these
services and more to more female veterans.” There’s
also a “Get Involved” tab on the site for potential
volunteers.
