Simulation of Healthilocks treated hair the treatment, but it isn’t meant to permanently straighten a client’s hair. “The fundamental premise is to rebuild the hair, and in the industry there seems to be a distinction between smoothing that is really more like straightening and then smoothing which is smoothing down the cuticle and making the hair like a healthy hair. So this is smoothing that is rebuilding the hair and smoothing down the cuticle. But there are no chemicals, so it’s not a straightening treatment…There is smoothing, but in a very technical sense of smoothing that all the professionals will understand,” explains Laura. She continues, “When the salon treatment is done, the product is bonded to the hair with a flat iron and the flat iron process will of course straighten out the hair after it’s been flat ironed and then you can shampoo immediately and style and it will go back to being curly. The reason it’s straight is because of the flat iron, not because of our product.” Also unlike most straightening treatments, Healthilocks is not toxic: “There are no bad chemicals or anything in it or created by the heat, so it’s all safe and natural—no gloves required, so your hands can be in it all day long.” We wanted to know if the system has to be used as a package deal or if it’s possible to use the at home treatment by itself in the event that someone doesn’t have access to a stylist who offers the in salon treatment. Laura says yes, “It can be used separately. It depends on…if you have a client that really isn’t going to want to spend something on a treatment in a salon, that’s business, you’ll have some folks who don’t want to do that. It can be used separately at home, and we have folks who do that who are not near one of our salons.” She added that Healthilocks believes that the best use of its products is definitely to have the salon treatment done first and then to follow up with the at home routine since you’ll see much healthier, restored hair this way, 66 COSMOBIZ SALON DECEMBER 2015 but she maintains that the at-home products are great in themselves and definitely worth using if you can’t get to a salon. “There are no bad chemicals or anything in it or created by the heat, so it’s all safe and natural—no gloves required, so your hands can be in it all day long.” Offer Healthilocks at Your Salon If you’re a stylist who’s interested in offering Healthilocks in your own salon, Laura suggests you give them a call at 800-431-1365. Healthilocks requires verification that you are a licensed stylist and will ask for your license number when you call in. Laura says this is “Because we really are helping people build their businesses and we’re not in the business of selling that salon treatment to individual customers.” If you’re wondering what other stylists are charging for the service, Laura says it’s anywhere from $50 to $150 or $200. She adds, “It really depends on market just like anything else,” and “it only adds about 20 minutes to a cut or color or other service if they’re already in the chair, so it’s a pretty high profit service to add.” You can market it as a stand alone service or as an add on. Founder, Jane Meyer, says “One San Diego stylist doesn’t charge for the treatment. He uses it as his ‘secret weapon’ that keeps his clients coming back like clockwork wondering, ‘I don’t know what he does to my hair, but I love it!’”
