L’Oréal Contributes to Recycling Initiative in
India
As a part of its local employment initiative which
hopes to assist over 100,000 underprivileged people by
2020, L’Oréal has, among other programs, developed
a recycling project in Mumbai. “In India, many
everyday products are sold in single-dose packets,
most being made of plastic. As this country’s recycling
systems are not yet well developed, this packaging is
often discarded rather than recycled, which results in
considerable harm to the environment,” explained a
company press release. “This issue was the stimulus
for L’Oréal’s waste-recycling project, developed in
partnership with the Indian cosmetics industry and a
waste-pickers’ association. A team of 200 women from
Mumbai joined forces to recover approximately 540
tonnes of this packaging in 13 Mumbai neighborhoods,
with the waste ultimately being transformed into a fuel
source. This initiative will gradually be extended to all
districts of Mumbai, even to other parts of India.”
Blurred lines between health, beauty, and medical
treatments prompted the Hong Kong beauty industry to
raise safety standards to protect customers, including
an arbitration committee and a quality services scheme.
This happened when a loophole highlighted by the
deaths of two women receiving liposuction and blood
transfusion beauty treatments, and another having
electrotherapy at private clinics over the past few years.
Thankfully, these tragedies prompted the government
to promise legislation that plugged a loophole in
the medical clinic ordinance that does not outlaw
procedures or devices, which are claimed to be used
only for health or beauty treatments rather than a
medical purpose. This move will include a quality mark
for salons that meet professional benchmarks set forth
by the industry, and will be assessed by the Federation
of Beauty Industry, Hong Kong.
