S ome first ladies have been icons of style while others tend to keep things very conservative. The nation has always paid close attention to how its president’s wife wears her hair. (We’re confident that soon we’ll be able to share first man style, too!) Here’s a timeline of first lady hair from the beginning of the country to today. 1809-1813 Dolley Madison’s portrait shows her hair pulled into a tall updo with plenty of curly tendrils hanging around the ears and in back. 1797-1801 A portrait of Abigail Adams shows her wearing a popular style bonnet over tightly curled hair. 1961-1963 Jackie Kennedy was known for her youth and her fashion sense while in the White House and after. Here, she wears her hair in a short coiffed style. We kind of want to recreate this look. 1913-1921 Ellen Axson Wilson wears her long hair in a loose top knot. 1981-1989 The late Nancy Reagan kept her brunette hair short and tall. 1885-1889 Frances Folsom Cleveland in a twisted updo. 1993-2001 Hillary delivers a speech on health care reform in 1994. She wears a short bob style with bangs. 2001-2009 Laura Bush kept her hair short and sweet, letting it fall just below the ears. 63
