The result marked the third straight win for the South over the North, and the fourth consecutive win for the division containing the Hooks. Frisco outfielder Steve Murphy opened the 10th with a home run to put the South ahead to stay. Drew Sutton and Chris Johnson each had two hits, including a double, while Richie Paz and Tommy Manzella were both 1-for-2. Ash’s game winner plated Frisco’s Casey Benjamin from third with nobody out and earned Ash MVP acclaim. Benjamin had walked and advanced to third on Todd Self’s single. All of this came on the heels of a home run to lead off the bottom of the 10th by San Antonio’s Will Venable – a blast that tied the score. The North had grabbed a 4-3 lead in the top of the 10th on a one-out, RBI single to right off the bat of Springfield’s Sean Danielson. Noochie Varner led all players with three hits. Corpus Christi’s five position players combined to go 7-for-16 with a double, a run and two RBIs – the most production for the Hooks offensively in the 11-year history of Corpus Christi’s involvement in the event. Chance Douglass, selected by South manager Dave Clark to start the game, retired all six batters he faced. While not the winning pitcher, Douglass was honored as the Bank of America Outstanding Pitcher. Troy Patton allowed a run on a solo home run by Adam Morrissey of Arkansas in his lone inning on the hill. The first All-Star game at Whataburger Field attracted a crowd of 8,676. 120
