A post-Christmas cruise is organised each year
to a coastal destination over a period of around
two weeks. Sailing is generally planned on the
basis of reaching the day’s destination by mid-
afternoon in order to enjoy a relaxing evening.
Regular VHF Radio skeds are maintained
between boats. Cruise planning is undertaken
with the acknowledgement that cruising sailors
do not venture out in unsuitable weather
conditions.
Long weekend/public holiday coastal cruises
can include destinations such as Newcastle,
Lake Macquarie or Port Stephens or Sydney
Harbour, Port Hacking or Jervis Bay. Timing may
include a few extended days. A cruise to Sydney
Harbour may have its ultimate destination at
the fish markets, the historic explosives storage
area at Bantry Bay or an exploration of the Lane
Cove River.
Long coastal cruises are organised every two
or three years and destinations may range from
the Whitsundays to Lizard Island or Yamba and
the Clarence River, to the north and to Eden and
Hobart in the south. Timing can be anywhere
from two to five months.
Cruising in a group is not only a great way for
new members to make new friends, it offers the
inexperienced yachtie the added reassurance of
knowing there will be someone to add support
and assistance should the unexpected happen.
This shared knowledge strengthens the group
as a whole and the bond between them.
