Life is not easy. Through personal struggles and conversations with friends I’ve come to understand that no matter how “fine” things appear externally, the interior can (and often does) portray a radically different picture. As we desperately seek to create the illusion of being okay, or better than okay, loneliness can seep in. The world around us is unaward of our true brokenness, and in these moments we feel most alone. However, through this piece, I want to suggest that we are not completely alone, nor are we ever; we are never alone because God is always with us. For those of you who do not identify as Christian—and at times, for those who do—the phrase “God is always with you” can seem unrealistic and unhelpful to the very real problem of loneliness.Yet, I wholeheartedly believe God is involved in every aspect of our lives. From the ray of sunshine that woke you up just in time for your final exam to the autosaved essay you thought had been deleted forever, God was, is, and always will be playing an active role in our everyday lives. And yes, He is also there in times when our essays don’t autosave, the times when a romantic crush breaks our hearts, the times when a close family member is diagnosed with a terminal illness. I pray that this piece challenges us to become aware of the presence of God in our lives. He’s always there, knocking. It’s up to us to let him in.
