Fifth drawer: Any miscellaneous items but may include any of the following: • Sterile gloves • Blades • • • • Minor surgical packs (scalpel handle, curved hemostats, Metzenbaum scissors, tissue forceps, suture scissors, gauze, for emergency vessel cut down Tracheotomy—sterile tracheostomy tubes A crash box may include the above materials in a scaled down version without the miscellaneous items. A crash box is useful in that it can easily be carried from one area to the next. All staff should be trained in triage, basic resuscitation techniques, and use of medical equipment. A 4-person protocol may be used. • Person 1: CPR team administers medications leader, Person 2: Performs compressions and rotates w/ Sterile thoracocentesis and/or pericardiocentesis packs, etc. • Major surgical packs (minor pack plus additional instruments such as retractor) for open chest CPR, etc. • Person 3: provides ventilation • Person 4: Records • Orogastric tubes • Mouth gags • Etc. chest Now, for any emergency that walks in your door, you can be prepared, organized, and provide immediate and effective lifesaving care to any pet.
