It was David Trimble’s birthday and he thought a cool way to celebrate it would be to run an off-the-grid street criterium. David put an invitation out through social media for a 20 lap race at the hour before midnight in the Red Hook district of Brooklyn. A few brave a souls on fixed wheel track bikes turned up and the race was born. Red Hook Crits attract bike messengers, trackies, roadies and the bearded, tattoo replete, fixies. “The philosophy of the Red Hook Crit is to bring out normally divergent cycling communities to one event,” David says. “On this level, it has been a massive success.” Now the Red Hook Crit has become a series with events in Brooklyn, Barcelona and Milan. The series has become the world’s premier track bike crit. Fixed gear track bikes are mandatory requiring the riders to possess street-tuned handling skills and high levels of fitness. redhookcrit.com 64
