The Last Supper A Miscellany of Le Tour de France 1964 1964 Anquetil created a sensation by appearing at a BBQ and getting into a drinking competition with his Directeur Sportif, Raphaël Géminiani. The reason? The astrologer Belline had announced that Anquetil would be killed in a fall on Stage 14. The race began and Anquetil rode like a condemned man. He hurtled down the Col d’Envalira in the mist, guessing the path. He got lucky. He caught up with his teammates and won the stage, defying the chilling prediction. Gimondi recalled how he saw the imprint of his bicycle tires in the road and had to peel asphalt off his legs at the end of the day. 103
