First graders learn value of helping others

As fires devastated the Panhandle , a group of first graders at St . Philip Catholic School decided it was time to take action . The idea was born when student Weldon Bowers told his mother that he wanted to have a lemonade stand in his driveway to raise money to send to the Panhandle to assist in relief efforts . However , his driveway was located in rural Inez — not the best spot to attract customers . His school agreed to let him have the stand during lunch , and his classmates quickly jumped on board . The entire event was organized in one day , and the students proudly raised more than $ 2,000 to send to firefighters fighting the blazes tearing through the Panhandle . Agriculture is a close knit community , and students like these are ensuring that it will stay that way for another generation .
