TEACHERS OF THE YEAR
Every year, staff at Garland ISD
schools nominate one of their own
to be named Campus Teacher of
the Year. This title represents 71
individuals who not only inspire their
students but their colleagues, as well.
They make learning memorable and
break down any potential barriers to
success. They also continuously seek
out opportunities to improve and
others to help.
The district partnered with the
Texas Rangers to celebrate
its 2017 winners
during GISD
Night at the Ballpark May 16. View a

Campus Teachers of the Year
are also invited to submit an
application for the districtwide
honor. A committee then selects one
elementary and secondary awardee.
Congratulations to Elementary
Teacher of the Year Christy Elms
from Sewell Elementary School
and Secondary Teacher of the Year
Lynette Varrassi from Naaman Forest
High School.
Elms overcame being
labeled “not college
material” to become
a 27-year educator
who inspires innovation and helps
students make the connection
between what they are learning and
how it impacts their lives today and
in the future. She teaches reading,
writing and social studies to
fourth-graders at Sewell.
Varrassi grew up in a family of
educators and GISD graduates.
She continued both traditions and
teaches AP English Language and
Composition, as well as AP Seminar,
at Naaman Forest. She helps students
grow an appreciation, and even love,
for reading and writing as they are
essential to success.
Elms and Varrassi will now advance
to the Region 10 Teacher of the Year
competition.
