AP acknowledgments on the rise in Garland ISD Garland ISD’s mission to grow Advanced Placement (AP) participation and achievement is resulting in success. Students enrolled in AP courses have the advantage of earning college credit while in high school. Thanks to the development of a strong AP program and team, nearly 700 students received AP acknowledgments last year—a 19 percent jump from 2017. “We had 695 GISD students who were recognized through the AP Scholar program,” said Director of Research, Assessment & Accountability Kim Caddell. “This is our highest level in any of the years that we’ve received these outcomes. All seven high schools had students recognized in 2018.” GISD is the proud home of 465 AP Scholars, 109 AP Scholars with Honor, 119 AP Scholars with Distinction, 10 National AP Scholars, 9 AP Seminar & Research Certificate honorees, and four AP Capstone Diploma recipients. “Success doesn’t just happen. You have to plan for it, and Garland ISD has implemented layers of supports for the AP program,” said Advanced Academics Administrator Kristyn Edney. Because of the district’s focus on AP, students received more than $150,000 through the National Math and Science Initiative, earned more than 10,000 potential college credits, and saved more than $3.3 million in potential college tuition.
