WHAT A BLAST WE HAD AT THE BIG BANG @
AYRSHIRE COLLEGE EVENT – PARTICULARLY
DURING THE BBC MICRO:BIT ROCKET
CAR COMPETITION
The contest was organised by
the Bloodhound project and
saw pupils from East Ayrshire
and North Ayrshire secondary
schools compete in a series of
high-speed races at our Ayr
campus.
Queen Margaret Academy
pupils were crowned the
champions after their rocket car
recorded an incredible speed of
48mph.
The Big Bang @ Ayrshire
College event was set up to

engineering and maths.
There is little doubt that the
event has sparked an interest
in many of the pupils who took
part, after they watched their
specially designed cars – that

had small sticks of dynamite

Under the supervision of the
British Army and engineering
lecturer William Morton, their
rocket cars raced in a straight

model.
Ardrossan Academy,
Auchenharvie Academy,
Greenwood Academy, Irvine
Royal Academy, and St.
Matthews Academy each had
two teams which battled it
out over the morning session.
Auchenharvie Academy’s
second car won with a speed of
41.42mph.
That speed was blown out
of the water in the afternoon
