Tracey and I both teach in the Fine & Performing Arts department at Windermere Preparatory School. We are diverse as a married couple. I am from York; she is from New York. She wishes she had grown up in York, I would have enjoyed growing up in New York. We often find ourselves pondering how it was that we even met.

During another previous part of our lives, but during the same time frame, I was working for my parents’ business in the textile industry in Yorkshire and Tracey owned her own business in the United States. Our diversity existed in geographic terms and in our endeavors in opposite parts of the world. The incredible coincidences which existed and continue to exist, are that we both learned to play the clarinet, we both studied in art schools and we are both excited by the music we enjoyed in the 1980s. We both enjoyed the same artists and writers, and we had both developed the same shared vision for arts education, and how we as individuals felt we could share our passion, skills and experience to become creative leaders in education.

As we move through this school year, we are joining forces as music and visual arts fellows to celebrate diversity in all of our NAE music, drama, dance and visual arts classrooms.

With this in mind, we have created a beautiful space on NAU in the Art Community. Let us know what you think or feel free to ask any questions in our forums. We have a virtual gallery, Artistic Focus Showcase, where we can celebrate diversity in the arts.

What is more powerful, heartwarming and unifying than a group of human beings singing together? Being joined together in song is one way in which we lift our spirits, connect with each other, communicate and share a love of music all at the same time. We would like to start our celebration of diversity in our arts classrooms by celebrating singing in our NAE schools. Head on over to the Music Community on NAU and see for yourself, and don’t forget to provide feedback in our forum!

Please send examples to myself and Tracey as we progress through the year. These can be photographs or film clips which we will embed into the gallery.

Celebrating diversity and engagement in our NAE arts classrooms!
