Reflections on Unconscious Bias course

We got in touch with a number of people who completed this course in September and asked them to provide us with a brief statement on what they thought of the course.

‘This course opened my eyes!! I also completed the optional online tools which offered me a fascinating insight into my own psyche! Why did I associate certain genders with certain roles more quickly than others?? Food for thought...’

‘I really enjoyed the Unconscious Bias course on NAU.  It was an accessible and interesting introduction to a topic that is really important to me both in my role as a teacher (thinking about how unconscious biases may affect my practice in the classroom) but also as a school leader (thinking about my role in recruitment and talent management).  The course provides a clear introduction as to why this topic is important, provides statistics that demonstrate this point further and provides 3 valuable takeaways to support you in overcoming unconscious bias.  It provided a valuable basis for a face to face session we had during school induction as well.  I would highly recommend his course to all staff.

Last month our theme was cultural awareness, and we encouraged you to try our Workplace & Personal Skills. At NAU we like to hear back from you with feedback and suggestions, so we can continue to bring you as much relevant content as possible.

‘I've been inspired by Global Goal #16 to promote inclusive participation in my school. I decided to take the Unconscious Bias course both as an inspiration and as a means to evaluate what I understand to be unconscious bias. As with all the NAU courses that I've completed, I was impressed with the approach to learning, which allowed me to understand unconscious bias at a deeper level than I understood previously and allowed me to consider my own biases in a non-threatening manner. I especially appreciated the explanation of the human brain mechanisms that contribute to our experience of bias. I also enjoyed the link to the Harvard University website that allowed me to select and test areas of bias. As the Michael Jackson song reminds us, we need to start with the "man in the mirror" to make a change. This course allows you to look in the mirror while giving you the awareness you need to make that change in yourself and in turn, be an inspiration to others.’
