Tackling Gender Imbalance #ThisManCares We hosted a #ThisManCares event in December at our Kilwinning Campus. The well-attended event promoted Care as a career choice, and attendees found out how to build a career in health, social care and early years. In the lead-up to the event, we profiled some of our current students, asking them what encouraged their career choice. Alistair said “I think men are really employable in the care sector. I think it’s a different day and age now, even from 10 years ago. Back when I was 18 I wouldn’t have thought about working in care.” Calum said “The nursery made sure that my children’s wellbeing was a priority, and so I started to become more involved with the nursery and got to see Scott Thomson how important it was for our family. I really enjoyed being involved, which helped me make the decision to look into early education as a career.” Scott said “I felt a little bit daunted when I was in secondary school. I thought to myself, I’m going to be the only guy wanting to do this. Even starting the college course, I was worried because I thought I’d be the only guy. Calum Black “But, I needn’t have. Everyone in the course is great, we are all treated the same.” Read Calum, Scott and Alistair’s stories on our blog. “ Alistair Weir I think men are really employable in the care sector. ” The magazine of Ayrshire College 35
