the most famous are the Tjeggelvas and
the Vuolvojaure, These are natural lakes
which hold a diverse range of fish spe-
cies including pike, grayling and trout.
The Pite can be divided into three ma-
cro-sections: the mountainous area from
Mavasjaure up to Tjeggelvas; the woo-
ded part from Tjeggelvas to the superb
rapids of Storforsen, which incidentally
are the highest natural rapids in Europe;
and the coastal stretch that goes from
the rapids of Storforsen to the munici-
pality of Piteå, and overlooks the Gulf of
Bothnia.
This river is considered one of the most
prestigious Swedish rivers for the arctic
grayling, often returning catches over
a kilogram in weight, with occasionally,
some exceptional catches of more than
two kilograms in weight.
The river Abmor is one of the tributa-
ries of the larger Pite. The Abmor is
characterized by ‘runs’ with alternating
stretches of calmer areas, with long tur-
bulent blades, where arctic graylingand
voracious pike proliferate. Its tea-colou-
