The source of the Tanagro River is not far from the
little village of Casalbuono, in Lucan territory, during
the course of the river, from the town of Padula, it be-
comes a bigger river, in the Potenza province; it then
continues to flow near the villages of Auletta, Caggia-
no and Pertosa, collecting the water of smaller streams
during its course, including those from the fantastic
“Angelo” caves. It then flows into the bigger Sele River,
nearby the town of Contursi Terme.
The fish that you’ll find in this river are wild brown
trout; due to high biological value of this area it’s very
important to mention that there is no stocked fish at
all. Several water keepers constantly control the river
and fishermen as well, assuring the respect and pro-
tection of the environment.
We’re talking about 3km of no kill stretch, with con-
stant hatch of several mayflies such as Betidi, Hepta-
geniidae, Ephemerellidae, and, especially from May to
September, heavy hatches of Oligoneuriella Rhenana.
In some areas, this river is very wide, up to 40 meters,
with several pocket waters that will “hide” big wild
brown trout.
Flies that will work on Tanagro River are very classical
CDC patterns, F-Flies, Comparadun and BWO tied on
hook size 16 down to smaller 20. During summer eve-
