5 Sheffield HIGH POWER AT CUTLERS’ HALL International delegates from 25 countries attend 9th International Conference on HIPIMS at Cutlers’ Hall DATE: 25 -28 June 2018 VENUE: Cutlers’ Hall DELEGATES: 120 TRADE STANDS: 28 heffield Hallam University (SHU) has been leading the development of High Power Impulse Magnetron Sputtering (HIPIMS) since 2001. Utilising highly ionised metal plasma, the thin films developed in the National HIPIMS Technology Centre UK have pushed the boundaries of materials performance and have been essential in improving the performance of aerospace and steam turbine blades, orthopaedic implants, cutting tools for difficult-to-cut materials such as aerospace alloys, rare-earth material coatings for cryocoolers of satellites and superconducting films for the particle accelerators of the Large Hadron Collider at CERN. This international conference is held bi-annually in Sheffield and connects the worldwide HIPIMS research community with industrial partners to share recent findings and new ideas. Sheffield is the perfect host - as the birthplace of stainless steel (invented in the city in 1913) it has a long history of innovations in materials science and industry. The conference attracts 120 delegates from 25 countries with a 50:50 split between industrial and academic backgrounds. The industrial exhibition attracts 28 www.conference-news.co.uk exhibitors from the UK and abroad. The facilities at Cutlers’ Hall enabled the entire conference and dinner to take place under one roof. Organisers were keen to connect the academic research community with the industrial world so ease of networking was important. Cutlers’ Hall proved a great success for international delegates who enjoy Cutlers’ Hall for its unique British manufacturing heritage linking well to the core of their work in developing cutting edge new materials back to the roots of stainless steel.
