3 Sheffield THE FULL MONTY Sheffield’s industrial past has inspired its future and now the city is an events powerhouse heffield’s role as the landing stage for the new Doctor Who, played by the Yorkshire- born actress Jodie Whittaker, has catapulted it into the spotlight. But the steel city has quietly been polishing up its act for a while now. Recently described by the Sunday Times as the ‘Northern Capital of Cool’, Sheffield is a city with real character and great people. It’s the birthplace of stainless steel and music legends such as the Arctic Monkeys and the Human League; it’s woven into the Peak District National Park giving it a distinctly outdoor feel and its industrial warehouses now house a thriving independent food scene. The magnificent Sheffield City Hall is the city’s largest space with capacity for 2,271 delegates. Cutlers’ Hall oozes Sheffield history and caters for up to 500, while Magna is a transformed former steel works with 4,000sqm of dedicated events space. The University of Sheffield and Sheffield Hallam University offer some of the newest academic spaces in the country. The city has an enviable knack of making delegates feel like locals from the outset and this is fostered by a strong ‘Team Sheffield’ approach. Led by Marketing Sheffield this network is dedicated to making sure event organisers take advantage of all the city has to offer. Sheffield is a fertile patch for ideas and ambitious creativity; the two universities and teaching hospitals are world leading in research and Sheffielders are not shy when it comes to shouting about their specialisms. Sector strengths include Advanced Manufacturing (the world-renowned research centre is the reason for McLaren Automotive now developing its carbon fibre technology here), Paediatric Medicine, Orthopaedics, Child Health Technology and Advanced Well-being. Access to expertise and speakers attracts specialist conferences from the UK and internationally. Take orthopaedics as an example. Just like the city made all things steel, many of the most advanced orthopaedic implants are created here. Sheffield has hosted the British Elbow and Shoulder Society, Hip Preservation Society and the British Orthopaedic Foot and Ankle Society to name a few. Next stop knees: with the International Paediatric Knee “THE CITY HAS AN ENVIABLE KNACK OF MAKING DELEGATES FEEL LIKE LOCALS FROM THE OUTSET AND THIS IS FOSTERED BY A STRONG ‘TEAM SHEFFIELD’ APPROACH”. www.conference-news.co.uk Conference later in 2019 and BASK (British Association for Surgery of the Knee) in 2021. The first ever conference on Child Health Technology will happen in Sheffield in 2020 recognising the city as the forerunner for the development of life changing technologies around Child Health and the Nuclear Innovation UK Conference takes place in July attracted by Sheffield’s Nuclear Research Centre. And it’s not just conferences on the city’s agenda. The UK Invictus Trials, the first ever home games for British wounded, injured and sick veterans and personnel, takes place 22-26 July.
