November ’ s Academic Venue Awards will take place at The Great Hall , Queen Mary University of London , a venue with a rich history and bright future
he inaugural Academic Venue Awards take place at The Great Hall , Queen Mary University of London ( QMUL ). The venue was not picked by accident , and boasts a rich history and elegant finishing befitting for such an event . The venue can accommodate 778 guests , with 366 on the ground floor seating system and 412 in the upper mezzanine . Dean Drury , manager , The Great Hall , QMUL , explains the history of the venue : “ The Great Hall , QMUL , was originally part of a much larger complex called the People ’ s Palace . Originally built in 1887 , it was rebuilt in 1936 after it was destroyed by fire .
There are in excess of 1,000 event spaces in the UK that are termed ‘ Academic Venues ’. It includes universities , schools , colleges , and libraries .
“ The People ’ s Palace aim was to bring arts and culture to the people of the East End of London . This ethos is something we are passionate about and it continues to be used for various performances at the weekends .” What , though , does Drury believe makes The Great Hall , QMUL a suitable venue for the Academic Venue Awards ? “ The Great Hall , QMUL , has a rich history yet is sometimes overlooked due to its location . It hosts a number of awards ceremonies each year and it will be amazing to showcase this stunning theatre to a wider audience .” Although rebuilt in 1936 , the venue was refurbished in 2012 , with many of its art deco , 1930s features restored
