Country Report What’s new in Vancouver? CMW starts its whistle stop tour of selected canadian MICE cities in the West, in the seaport of VANcouver, BC ancouver regularly ranks high in terms of quality of life, most recently ranked third best city to live in, behind Zurich and Sydney in a July 2017 Ipsos poll and fifth in the world by Mercer in March 2017. Vancouver also won Best Airport in North America – at the 2017 Skytrax World Airport Awards. Vancouver International Airport (YVR) recently introduced new international flight routes: direct service to Delhi, Brisbane, Dublin, Nagoya, San Jose and San Diego via Air Canada. There are also direct services to Rome, Xiamen, Hangzhou, Orlando, Zhengzhou and Melbourne. There is also increased capacity for already popular direct flights to London Heathrow, Auckland, Mexico City, Chicago and Dallas. Vancouver is home to the annual TED conference, and some of the world’s brightest minds returned in April 2017 for the 33rd annual event. The TED Conference had relocated from California to British Columbia in 2014 and TED curator, Chris Anderson, has described host city Vancouver as “cosmopolitan, energetic, innovative, yet with unrivalled natural beauty”. Previous TED speakers in Vancouver have included Bill Gates, Sting, Jimmy Wales (founder of Wikipedia), Larry Page (CEO of Google), Martha Stewart and Elon Musk. The 34th annual TED Conference returns in April 2018 with the theme ‘The Age of Amazement’. 32 / Conference & Meetings World / Parq Vancouver The new venue kid on the block is Parq Vancouver, an ‘urban resort’ with two hotels under one roof. It opened on 29 September. The complex consists of the JW Marriott hotel (Western Canada’s first); The Douglas (an Autograph Collection boutique hotel); eight restaurants and lounges; a 2,787sqm rooftop park; gaming space; and 5,760sqm of meeting and event space (including the largest hotel ballroom in Vancouver). The complex includes 466 rooms and 51 suites (329 rooms at the JW Marriott and 188 rooms at The Douglas). Parq Vancouver is built to LEED Gold-certified standards. 2019 ECOCITY World Summit The British Columbia Institute of Technology (BCIT) will host the 2019 ECOCITY World Summit in Vancouver. The Summit series is held every two years since 1990 and will bring over 1,000 delegates from 30 countries to the VCC in October 2019 for discussion and debate based on the theme, ‘Socially Just and Sustainable Cities’. Sporting events The World Seven Series Tournament will return to Vancouver in 2018 in March, with BC Place Stadium the venue.
