Ask, “Would anyone like to share what you discussed about the benefits to yourselves and others of striving for or achieving these things (i.e., financial gain, physical pleasure, praise, and status) or trying to avoid them (i.e., financial loss, physical pain, blame and insignificance)?” 10. Next ask, “Would anyone like to share what you discussed about the harms to yourselves and others that occur from striving for or achieving these things or trying to avoid them?” 11. Next ask, “What did you discuss about how the harmful mental states associated with the pursuit of these things or attempts to avoid them distort reality?” 12. To tease out the distorted nature of the mental states that can arise in our pursuit and avoidance of these goals, you may ask: a. “How long lasting is the satisfaction that comes from achieving one of these goals?” b. “How much control do we have over these goals?” c. “Are these extrinsic or intrinsic goals?” 13.
