11. Allow Space for Silence
One of the more difficult things to learn as a facilitator is welcoming silence. Silence can feel awkward at
times, particularly after posing a question or asking for feedback. Allowing participants time to process
and answer questions, however, is extremely important. Use your CIT skills to allow this silence to come
and go naturally. Jumping in too soon to bolster the conversation can stunt the discussion and break the
safe space. Just like most things in CIT, this skill of allowing space for silence feels more natural the more
you practice.
12. Maintain High Standards of Professionalism
While facilitating CIT or representing the program it is important to maintain a high level of professional
standards, including:
a.
Maintaining timely and clear communication with CCISE, Compassionate Integrity Training course
participants, and all parties involved in organizing, hosting, sponsoring, or attending Compassionate
Integrity Training courses.
b. Arriving early for courses and meetings related to a Compassionate Integrity Training course and
allocating sufficient time to set up event spaces prior to the scheduled beginning of the session and
to leave spaces in acceptable condition when complete, or otherwise arranging for these activities.
c.
Preparing and presenting well-organized courses.
d. Working pro-actively to create conducive conditions for facilitating Compassionate Integrity
Training courses including: informing participants in advance regarding the venue location, access,
and parking as appropriate, arranging for the availability of appropriate seating, ensuring access to
restroom(s), and addressing any apparent hazardous conditions.
e.
Maintaining a respectful manner of dress and speech during Compassionate Integrity Training
activities.
f.
Promoting a friendly, safe, and welcoming environment for all participants and treating all
Participants with respect. In the event that a participant appears to need immediate medical
attention, you should request professional assistance by calling emergency responders by using the
emergency phone number for their location.
g.
Familiarizing yourself with all guidelines or policies and procedures for the venue at which you are
facilitating a CIT course, or have an onsite contact who will serve as a liaison.
