C OMPASSION S KITS *
Goal: To allow participants to see how compassion is a motivation, how the same action might have
different motivations and to discern between the noticing, empathic concern, and agency, the three
components of compassion.
Materials: Space to perform skits
Time: 20 to 30 Minutes
Instructions:
1. Split participants into groups of three or four.
2. If you haven’t already, explain the three components of compassion (noticing suffering, empathic
concern and sense of agency).
3.
Explain, “Please create a short skit with your group that depicts a scenario that requires
compassion. You will perform the skit twice. The first time through, one of the three components
of compassion should be absent. The rest of us will try and guess which component you have left
out. Then, the second time through, all three components should be present. Please include a part
for all of your group members.”
4.
After giving the groups five to seven minutes to create their skits, bring them back together and ask
for a group who would like to go first.
5.
After each group finishes presenting their first skit, ask, “Which of the three components of
compassion was missing?”
6. After a discussion and decision, ask the group who performed, “Please reveal the correct answer.”
7. After they do so, and after a brief discussion ask, “Please perform the skit again with all three
components present.”
8.
After each group has had an opportunity to perform, debrief the exercise using the following
questions:
