E MPATHIC C ONCERN P RACTICE S CRIPT
(12 to 15 minutes)
In Preparation for the Practice:
During this practice you will be asked to bring to mind a time in your life when someone had empathic
concern for you (i.e., they had a sense of what you were experiencing and showed a sense of care and
concern). If you cannot think of such a time, bring to mind what you imagine it would be like to have
someone show empathic concern to you. You will also be asked to bring to mind a time in your life when
you had empathic concern for another person. If you cannot think of such a time, imagine what it would be
like if you had. Before we begin, you may want to take a moment to think of what examples you want to
use during the practice.

This contemplative practice is designed to be used in conjunction with the Compassionate Integrity
Training program. Many of the terms and concepts used in this practice assume knowledge that comes from

Let’s begin the practice by taking a relaxed and upright posture. ( For instructions and tips about posture,
please listen to the Introduction to Contemplative Practices podcast. ) (pause 15 seconds)
Now begin whatever stabilizing practice or practices you find helpful, such as resourcing, deep breathing,
and focused attention. (pause 1 to 2 minutes)
Bring to mind a time in your life when someone had empathic concern for you (they had a sense of what
you were experiencing and showed a sense of care and concern). If you cannot think of such a time, bring to
