Change of Heart is a gay erotic fantasy novel that follows the life of Jin and his friend Crane as they travel across america trying to outrun Jin’s past and nature. The fantasy comes in the fact that Jin is a were-panther and also a very special one at that, he is a Reah. The Reah is destined to be mated to a leader of a pack when he meets his true mate. However because he is a male Reah and so rare when other panthers find out what he is it normally leads to him being beaten and hurt.

This novel has a good pace and reaches its height between chapters 8 and 10. This is not to say its bad before or after these just before its a bit slow and after there is too much sex involved. The sex would normally not be bad but when there is a sex scene once or twice in every chapter they lose there magic and start to get repetitive. The overall story is very interesting and Jin’s past mirrors some more tragic real life coming out stories.

I did like all the characters, however I feel this book has what I like to think of as the 50 shades of grey or Twilight problem. The relationship between Jin and his mate is a very controlling and damaging one. I will not name his mate as I feel it’s better if you don’t know him, but he trys to control Jin. He wants him to live with him, not talk to anyone without his permission and so on. This is made out to be because he loves him and wants to protect him but this is the wrong way of doing this yet it is painted to be ideal. Jin does fight back against it and that is good to see but this should not be here to start with.

I think this book is worth a read, the first 2 sex scenes are hot, the characters are easy to relate to and the lore is amazing. The problems come with repetitive sex scenes and a unhealthy relationship painted as perfect. I would read this but be aware this is not what anyone wants and you should not aim for this in a relationship. This book gets 3 were-panther’s out of 5.
