She was the eldest of five children. Raised on a farm during the Great Depression, Thelma was fortunate to have a loving family. To this day, they all still enjoy sharing tales of their happy childhood. After graduating from El Dorado Springs High School in 1945, Thelma started attending college. This was the beginning of a long journey for Thelma and her family. In order to pay for her first semester, she had to sell a cow that was a gift from her father. One year later, Thelma married Lilburn (L.D.) Forest, her neighbor and high school friend. While attending college, Thelma worked as a teacher in a one room school house and as a dental assistant. In 1971, Thelma earned her B.S in Elementary Education from Pittsburg State. She continued to teach school for 30 years and substituted for 15 more years, making great friends along the way. Thelma has been blessed by two children, five grandchildren and 11 greatgrandchildren. She is blessed they all live close and visit regularly. Thelma has been an inspiration to three of her nieces, as they too have chosen to pursue a career in education. Thelma stays busy by quilting, crafting and teaching others to garden. She has served as treasurer for both the Cedar County Hospital Auxiliary Board and the Church of Christ. She won her district’s Retired Teachers award, is a member of the SORSEA teachers union and is a devout Kansas City Royals fan. On June 10th Thelma represented Community Springs Healthcare Facility in the MHCA District IV Beauty is Ageless Pageant. Thank you Thelma for representing Community Springs and thank you for being our resident of the month. Are you a caring individual who would like to assist in caring for the elderly?
