In Cochrane, 55% of the population reported English only as mother tongue, 39.3% reported French only, 4% reported a non-official language, and close to 3% reported Cree as their primary language. In comparison, the provincial and territorial percentages were 68.2% for English only, 3.9% for French only, 25.7% for only non-official languages and 0.03% for Cree.

In 2011, 68.3% percent of the population spoke only English most often at home, 28.7% percent spoke only French and 0.8% percent spoke only a non-official language. In comparison, the provincial and territorial percentages were 79% percent for only English, 2.2% percent for only French and 14.4% percent for only a

non-official language.

Cochrane has an extensive network of educational institutions as well as committed private and public sector champions, which have all contributed to an educated and qualified labour force.

According to the National Household Survey (2011) for the Town of Cochrane, the rate of individuals with a registered apprenticeship certificate is significantly higher than that of both the provincial and national averages which will serve the community well when faced with projected trade related shortages.
