Community Insider Summer 2017 - Page 2

PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE O ver the past year, CAI-San Diego has increased publication and distribution of the Community Insider magazine to over 5000 copies! You may not be aware of our organization and what we bring to San Diego. Your only impression of HOAs may be negative, especially if you received a notice about your trash cans being left outside too long. DAY AT THE As of 2015, community associations housed approximately 21.1% of the U.S. population1 and those numbers are continuing to rise. California has the second highest number of community associations in the nation (behind Florida) with approximately 44,900, housing over over 9 million people. More and more San Diegans live in these communities. Laurie S. Poole, Esq. is a community association attorney with Peters & Freedman, L.L.P., and has been a member of the firm since 1993. She is a fellow of CAI’s College of Community Association Lawyers (CCAL) and has served on the CAI-San Diego Board since 2014. Laurie is actively involved with CAI National and local chapters, has published numerous articles relating to common interest developments and has presented educational programs at CAI’s California chapters and the CCAL Law Seminar. RACES Other than sending trash can notices, community associations are responsible to operate, manage and maintain your community. Who carries out these important functions? In addition to your neighbors who volunteer to serve on the board, many HOAs have professional community managers. The managers and boards work with a team of professionals, including landscapers, maintenance contractors, insurance professionals and attorneys. Working with community associations requires an understanding of their unique aspects. That is where CAI-San Diego plays an important role. DEL MAR RACE TRACK We are the premier provider of education, advocacy and resources for San Diego community associations and the people who serve them. Our classes and education programs teach volunteers and managers serving your community about responsible governance, while keeping them on top of current issues and trends. We advocate on behalf of community associations on proposed legislation that could impact you and your neighborhood. In April, members of CAI-San Diego met with our district’s legislators in Sacramento to talk about pending bills. Our 800+ members include professionals who understand the unique aspects and needs of community associations. SAVE THE DATE We also like to have fun! Our social events provide an opportunity to network and enjoy downtime. Now that it’s summer, in addition to the break from school, taking family vacations and barbequing, plan to join CAI San Diego for our brand new Tiki Party to be held on July 20, 2017 at the Hilton Mission Bay and our annual favorite “Day at the Races” on August 16. While school is out for some, not for CAI-San Diego. Managers can attend the M-203 class on June 22-23. Our June 30 “Patriotic” themed Trade Show and Luncheon at the DoubleTree Hotel in Mission Valley will have a program on “Conflicts, Contracts, & Change Orders”. Rounding out our summer is the August 4 Trade Show and Hawaiian themed Luncheon at the Sheraton, Carlsbad featuring “Trees: Liabilities or Assets.” WEDNESDAY AUGUST 16, 2017 If you are not a member of CAI-San Diego, consider becoming one so that you can attend all our events at discounted rates. Like us on Facebook and be sure to download our App so that CAI-San Diego’s information is always accessible. Enjoy the warmer weather and I hope to see you at one of our upcoming events.
