Community Insider Fall 2017 - Page 2

PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE Laurie S. Poole, Esq. is a community association attorney with Peters & Freedman, L.L.P., and has been a member of the firm since 1993. She is a fellow of CAI’s College of Community Association Lawyers (CCAL) and has served on the CAI-San Diego Board since 2014. Laurie is actively involved with CAI National and local chapters, has published numerous articles relating to common interest developments and has presented educational programs at CAI’s California chapters and the CCAL Law Seminar. F all is my favorite time of year! September through November produce some of the best weather in San Diego – clear warm days, gorgeous sunsets and nights that start to get “chilly.” Some of our trees even change color (ok, maybe not like New England). Going back to school is a definite sign that the Fall season has arrived. If you haven’t been to one of CAI-San Diego’s education classes, there are still plenty left to attend! The San Diego Trade Show and Luncheon on September 15 at the Doubletree Mission Valley will feature an education program on “Hostile Work Environments.” For our homeowner leaders, the 2nd annual Board Leadership Development Workshop will be held on Saturday September 23, 2017 at the Four Points Sheraton in San Diego. This 6-hour comprehensive course is ideal for those of you serving on your HOA board. Topics to be covered include: governing documents, conflict resolution, meetings, choosing service providers and fundamentals of financial management. Rounding out the year is the always popular “Legislative Update and Almost Free Legal Advice” to be held on the morning of November 10 at the QLN Conference Center in Oceanside. In addition to becoming educated, treat yourself to our social events this Fall. The focus is on fun (not skill) at our annual Golf Classic that will be held on Friday October 6 at Encinitas Ranch. Say “thank you” to our generous business partners (without whom we could not provide our outstanding events) at the November 14 Appreciation Mixer at Tom Ham’s Lighthouse. Our annual election for the CAI-San Diego’s Board of Directors is also underway this Fall. Having served on the Board for the past 3½ years, I can tell you that it has truly been a rewarding experience, especially seeing CAI-San Diego change, evolve and provide opportunities for everyone. Please participate in this year’s election – and be sure to vote! If you are not a member of CAI-San Diego, consider becoming one so that you can attend all our events at discounted rates. Like us on Facebook and be sure to download our App so that CAI-San Diego’s information is always accessible. Enjoy the Fall season and I hope to see you at one of our upcoming events – whether education or otherwise. Sincerely, Laurie S. Throughout the year, CAI-San Diego provides education about the roles and responsibilities of serving HOAs. Why is this education important? Educating managers and homeowner volunteers results in better governance for San Diego’s community associations. CAI San Diego’s Education Services Committee works hard year-round to provide education on a variety of topics pertaining to HOAs. So far this year, our manager and homeowner members have learned about mastering architectural guidelines, electric vehicle charging stations, common interest development law, time management, board ethics and fiduciary duties, reserve studies, contract negotiations and tree liability and assets. 2 SAN DIEGO COMMUNITY INSIDER MAGAZINE EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR Richard Ybarra 858-836-1119 SALES & MARKETING Reagan Espino Claudia Sitta COMMUNICATION/DISTRIBUTION/CIRCULATION Alexa Mitchell CAI GRAPHIC ARTIST Rodney Bissell – Bissel Design Studios, Inc.
