New Communications Handbook
Helps Departments Work Together
The Communications Department is dedicated to aligning with the City’s Strategic
Plan, establishing a brand, increasing awareness of the City’s message,
programs and events through a variety of mechanisms including media, social
media, the website, as well as engaging the community. The Department works
to provide accurate, clear, concise, and transparent information to residents,
businesses, visitors and interested parties. In 2018, the Department created a
Communications Policies and Procedures Manual to ensure communications
efforts are ethical and collaborative. This guide helps coordinate and manage the
communications activities of the City. It ensures branding accuracy of messaging,
consistency and timelines in relaying information to employees, departments,
members of the media, citizens and the public at large.
Procurement Implements
Best Practices
Procurement Management achieved the goal of being awarded the National
Institute of Government Purchasing Outstanding Agency Accreditation
Achievement Award. This award recognizes agencies that lead the public
procurement profession through the implementation of best practices. In 2018,
the division followed the highest ethical standards and implemented new best
practices for real estate surplus and the associated policies and procedures.
It also developed and implemented a new web-based automated surplus
processing form to streamline processes, while supporting paperless functions.

Mentorship
Program

The City’s Building Department recently created and
implemented a one-of-a-kind Mentorship Program. The
goal of the program is to involve senior staff in assisting,
guiding, motivating, coaching and sharing experiences
with staff. Through this mentorship program, those with
less experience or who are new to the department,
can garner valuable information and training from their
mentors. Mentees have the opportunity to shadow a
mentor and attend meetings such as site plan review
and contractors examining board meetings. Because
mentoring has been a major topic of construction trade
associations, building officials conferences, contractor
meetings and board meetings of industry professionals,
this unique program was launched.
