That’s why our fetal care center and neonatology teams have collaborated to implement a Wellness Team comprised of social workers, physicians, psychologists, psychiatrists, child life specialists and spiritual care. Working together, we strive to decrease the burden of medical care on families with team-based care plans built around each individual family’s situation and needs. We focus on families’ strengths to create the framework of resources and clinical support families and infants need to thrive. The smallest quadrant Like most NICUs, ours takes care of very small pre-term babies, about 10 to 15% of total admissions. Previously those patients were distributed throughout the unit. Through research, we’ve learned more about their unique needs — and it’s changed the way we care for them. In July 2019, we developed a quadrant of the unit specifically for these smallest babies, which we keep darker and quieter, to create the natural circadian rhythms they need to grow. We’ve also staffed this new section of the unit with a team of about 50, including nurses with the additional training needed to care for them. It’s just one example of the many ways we’re advancing the standard of care for these tiny, vulnerable babies during a crucial time that, in many ways, will affect the rest of their lives.
