Marguerite Gates was born May 4,
1923, to Monroe and Etta Holmes in
Liberty, Texas.
When Margurite was a young girl,
her family moved to Jordan, Missouri,
where her grandmother, Maggie
Willett, built the Jordan General Store
(1901) and ran the Jordan Post Office.
Marguerite went to school and
Owsley up to 8th grade and then trans-
ferred to Cross Timbers for high school.
When she was 15 years old, she met
J.D. (John) Gates at her grandmother’s
store. “We went to the movies in
Warsaw and play parties. We also went
to the neighbor’s house to move furni-
ture, play music and dance,” Margue-
rite said. The couple married in June
1939, and then moved to Utah for
work.
J.D. worked with his uncle and Mar-
guerite helped her Aunt Allice cook and
run a boarding house. The Gates came
back to Missouri and had their first
child in 1943. Altogether, the couple
had four children: Sharon, John, Rod,
and Lynn. They have 10 grandkids and
10 great-grandkids.
In addition to working with her aunt,
Marguerite took care of her children,
helped farm, milked cows (including
her own cow, Martha), raised gardens
and canned over 400 quarts of fruits
and vegetables in her spare time. In
1966 she began selling Avon
and did so for 48 years, right up to
the day she came to Colonial Springs.
“The most popular items were face
creams and lipstick. You had to sell a
lot to get one of the Porcelain Figu-
rine Dolls” Marguerite said.
Marguerite came to Colonial
Springs in December 2016 and is a
delight to be around. Some of her
favorite activities include bingo, nail
care, going to church and bible stud-
ies, and visiting with her table mates
at meal times.
Thank you, Marguerite, for allow-
ing us to get to know you better!
