She was the oldest of three children, having one brother and one sister. Dottie grew up in the Plad and Bennett Springs areas and attended Windyville High School until she graduated in 1941. “One day while I was in high school, Leland Cansler came by in his fancy car and asked me to go for a ride,” stated Dottie with a smile. “It was love from then on.” On November 8, 1941, Leland and Dottie were married in Cedar Ridge, Mo. Two months later, Leland left for basic training. It was nearly three years before the couple were reunited, after war was over. While he was overseas, Dottie worked at the defense plant near Kansas City and lived with Leland’s family. After his discharge, the couple moved to Colorado, where they both employed for a local orchard. Leland went on to work construction and Dottie worked in a drug store. They moved to Illinois for a short time and then in 1951, they purchased a farm in Long Lane, Mo., where they operated a Grade A milk barn. Dottie retired from Zenith Corporation after 21 years of employment. Sadly, in 2010, Leland passed away. Leland and Dottie were blessed with two children: Wendell and Sonja. They have four beautiful grandchildren and three greatgrandchildren. In her spare time, Dottie enjoyed quilting, canning, growing flowers and baking pumpkin pies and banana bread. In the summer of 2015, Dottie made Colonial Springs Healthcare Center her new home. She enjoys visiting with the other ladies as well as attending exercise class, social gatherings and religious activities. Thank you Dottie for your story.
