Virgil’s fondest childhood memory was going camping on the river with his brothers. He recalls with a smile, “We would go to the river, take a cow for milk, momma would make us pancake batter and we would swim in the buck.” Virgil attended Erie High School, where he played football and basketball, until he graduated in 1941. “We went to state in basketball,” Virgil says with a smile. “We didn’t do very well in the tournament, because we played pool the entire time we were there. We were too tired to play basketball.” That same year he was drafted into the Army and served our country during World War II. While in the Army, he met, and eventually married, Billie Steel. Together the couple had two sons, James and Daniel. After five years of marriage, Billie and Virgil decided to go their separate ways. On Aug. 30, 1952, Virgil married Rita Edwards. They were blessed with four children: Anita, Russell, Edward and Linda. Virgil has always been hard worker. He would work odd jobs until he was hired by the U.S Postal Service, where he worked until his retirement. In 1978, Virgil and Rita purchased 40-acres of land and moved to Arkansas. Owning land in the Ozarks had always been a dream of Vigil’s. When they weren’t going on wagon drives, the couple would supplement their income by selling rocks and lumber from their land. In 2003, Virgil and Rita relocated to Pittsburg, Kan., where they lived until 2012, when Virgil and Rita move to an assisted living facility, to be closer to their children. In 2014, the couple made the move to Colonial Springs Healthcare Center, to be sure that Virgil received the best care possible. “We have made Colonial Springs our home and we love living here,” says Rita. Thank you Virgil for sharing your story with us. We love having you as part of our family. Are you a caring individual who would like to assist in caring for the elderly?
