Herman Burns was born on Jan . 21 , 1928 , to Jim and Rosie Burns in Sentinal , Okla . He was the oldest in his family , having one brother and one sister . When he was 7 years old his mother passed away and he moved in with his grandparents who raised him .
When he was 16 years old he went to California with his father and uncle . While he was there he joined the U . S . Army Corps two weeks before World War II was over . “ I actually told them I was 18 . They accepted me , but I don ’ t think they believed me because I was just a scrawny little kid ,” says Herman . “ I was trained as a heavy equipment operator and to drive a truck .” About the time he reenlisted , the Army Corps became the U . S . Air Force . “ I was discharged from the Air Force in 1948 ,” says Herman .
After his discharge he went home to Oklahoma for one week , then decided to leave for Washington with a few of his buddies . They all ventured out to Yakima , Wash . This is where he met the woman of his dreams , Joyce Alyce Flohr . They met at a party on the Yakima River .
The Burnses were married at a preacher ’ s house in Selah , Wash ., on March 3 , 1951 . The couple celebrated their 66th wedding anniversary .
Herman and Joyce were blessed with six children . Bobby passed away in
2002 . Vicky lives in Emporia , Kan . Ricky resides in Springfield . Kathy lives in Long Lane . Bradley resides in Springfield , and Randy passed away in 1985 . They have 18 grandchildren , 24 great grandchildren and four great-great grandchildren .
Herman loved to race . He raced stock cars for nine years and was inducted into the Elma Racing Hall of Fame . In March he and his entire family took a trip back to Washington to visit his old stomping grounds and to attend their annual meeting . “ I had such a great time , seeing all of my old racing buddies ,” says Herman .
Another highlight of Herman ’ s life was when her took the “ Honor Flight ” to Washington , D . C ., in 2010 .
In 1969 , the Burnses moved to the Rondo area and lived on a 40-acre farm . In 1980 they moved to south Texas where Herman drove a truck for Fox Fly Co . In 1996 , he retired and lived at Pomme de Terre Lake until he came to Colonial Springs in November 2016 .
