Strategy 2020
ONE HEALTH REMAINS STRATEGIC FOCUS
The College ’ s new strategic plan , Strategy 2020 , builds on Council ’ s previous initiatives on veterinary leadership of One Health .
Council is committed to the stewardship of One Health activities that link veterinary medicine and human health . In support of that commitment , the College is working with One Health partners to promote resources to veterinarians and the public . The College regularly contributes its opinion on emerging issues related to animal welfare , public health and veterinary medicine .
Council is looking forward to sharing the action agenda that is central to its current Growing Forward 2 project on food animal medicine and the prescribing of antimicrobials . A key outcome of the project is the establishment of a provincial collaborative on antimicrobial resistance . The College will be working with the Ontario Ministry of Agriculture , Food and Rural Affairs , the Ontario Veterinary College , and the Ontario Veterinary Medical Association , through the newly formed collaborative to contribute to veterinary stewardship of antibiotic use in foodproducing animals in Ontario .
Also in relation to the use of antimicrobials , watch for College communications supporting the implementation of new federal regulations on veterinary oversight of prescribing .
Animal welfare is central to the One Health initiative . Council will be implementing a threeyear animal welfare agenda which includes a policy on the humane handling of animals by veterinarians , a review of the College ’ s existing pain management position statement , public education on possible risks associated with the use of alternative medicine , and a provincial forum focused on animal welfare .
In the previous strategic plan , Council demonstrated its leadership in public health through initiatives related to shelter medicine , rabies , antimicrobial resistance , and public education . Council also approved its first Animal Welfare position statement . Veterinarians have a significant role in public health - Council is proud to support that important role .
