COLLEGE BASEBALL RECRUITING SPECIAL EDITION Special Edition | Page 15

baseball for a living and obtain the resources to not have to “ work ” after your career is over , then you are probably not interested in this article . If you are , Congratulations . If not , read on .
Following my earlier suggestion of securing a REAL evaluation , I would suggest to make some simple projections based on your DNA , desire , work ethic , and academic abilities . Let me explain . If you feel that you will grow significantly , continue to work hard , be committed to this pursuit and be very focused , both on & off the field - the culmination of that effort will project you at what level ? Division 1 , 2 or 3 ? That certainly doesn ’ t mean that if you do all of the above that you can play at any level , it simply states that based on the combination of those elements - where you would project ? Establish three levels of projection High - Mid - Low . The High level should equate to the highest level you truly feel you can compete at and matriculate academically . The Mid to Low levels would be a step down accordingly . Remember , this is only an exercise to establish a starting point for your process . Once you feel comfortable with understanding your projections it is time to begin formulating a list of schools that match your plan . Again , through this entire process , stay grounded ; stay REAL . A critical point to make is that you have to be true and REAL to yourself . Challenge yourself to embrace this process and do everything you are capable of doing to be the best you can be , both on & off the field . There is only one person that controls this effort - YOU ! You cannot “ fool ” yourself . Anything less than giving all you have to give will directly impact your future success .
Prior to explaining what a coach would want to read / see from you , I would like to recommend a couple of “ filters ” that are important in determining a school that would be appropriate for you . Please consider the following :
ACADEMIC / ADMISSIONS - Do you have the ability to be admitted as well as being academically successful at the institution you are interested in playing baseball ?
FINANCIAL - Is the financial commitment required to attend equate to a “ solid ” investment for your future , both on & off the field ?
OPPORTUNITY - Is there a legitimate opportunity to compete early in your career ? How many players are cut ? How many players transfer ?
LOCATION - If I were not going to play a sport , would this be a school I would choose ?
MUTUAL INTEREST - Has any interest been established “ from ” the school not just your interest “ in ” the school ?
In essence , applying these “ filters ” will allow you to assemble the list then apply the filters to further focus your targeted schools of interest . These filters can be applied in any order that is appropriate for your situation .
Once this process is complete , it is now the time to put together your “ intro ” package which you will send to your list of schools . It is my opinion to keep the information as specific as possible
