FEATURE Art in Demand By Todd Herman Chief Curator and Curator of European Art This fall, one of the most intriguing paintings in the Museum’s collection, François Boucher’s Joseph Presenting His Father and Brothers to Pharaoh, will travel to Allentown, Pennsylvania for the exhibition Shared Treasure: The Legacy of Samuel Kress, on view from October 14, 2011 - January 15, 2012 at the Allentown Art Museum. Like our own Columbia Museum of Art, the Allentown Art Museum counts among its holdings a stellar collection of Old Master paintings donated by Samuel H. Kress and the Kress Foundation in the 1950s and 1960s. Not only was Allentown the site of a Kress ?ve and dime store, but the small city in southeast Pennsylvania was the hometown of Samuel Kress. The exhibition celebrates the generosity of this hometown boy and the grand opening of an 8,000 sq. ft. expansion of the museum. Royal commissions, but it included a three to ?ve year stay in Rome to study the great works of art from ancient Rome to the Renaissance.
