COMING SOON Found in Translation: The Art of Steven Naifeh Will South, chief curator The Columbia Museum of Art announces the opening of Found in Translation: The Art of Steven Naifeh, on view May 17 through September 1, 2013. The CMA is proud to host this, the first major American museum showing of the complex work of this multi-talented speaker, writer and painter. Steven Naifeh is an Arab-American both by lineage (his grandparents were born in a part of Syria that is now Lebanon and Jordan) and by upbringing. As the son of diplomats, he spent his childhood throughout the Middle East—in Jordan, Iraq, Iran, Libya, and Oman as well as the United Arab Emirates He also lived in Pakistan and Nigeria. As a young man in 1975, Naifeh had an exhibition in Abu Dhabi, as well as other exhibitions in the Islamic world—in Jordan, Pakistan, and the Muslim cities of Kano and Kaduna in Nigeria. His art was recognized then for its subtle beauty and simplicity, the serenity and inevitability of its symmetrical patterns and geometrical designs, its lyricism and its pristine pitch.
