Amidst this flurry of summer camp activity from June to
mid-August, the Art School also offers three weeks of
community outreach camps for at-risk children, which helps bring art to all corners
of our area.
In fact, the Art School brings art to life and not just for children – classes and
workshops are offered to adults year-round with something for the inner muse in
everyone, novice or expert, from drawing to jewelry making to quilting. Plus we
provide opportunities for adults to participate alongside their children as well. Family
programs such as Wee Wednesdays, One Room Schoolhouse, Family Fun days and
Passport to Art encourage hands-on parent/child art activities and education, and
everyone has a great time. The impact of the Art School’s workshops, classes, and
summer camps on our lives is far-reaching, fostering ingenuity and a greater
appreciation for the arts in the tiniest tots to the young at heart.
These programs would not be possible without the dedication of the members of
the Museum’s volunteer Docent Corps. Each year, the Museum serves thousands of
children and visitors through school programs, outreach, family programs, and tours.
Members of the Docent Corps lead hundreds of tours each year, teach hands-on studio
activities and assist the Museum’s outreach team in bringing the Museum directly into
classrooms and community centers across the Midlands. To enhance their knowledge
of art and the Museum, they also spend countless hours attending trainings, lectures
and gallery talks. Deepest thanks go to all members of the Docent Corps who work so
hard to inspire, teach and cultivate the community, Museum visitors, and members.
Their decades of hard work and dedication have helped make the Museum what it is
today. For more information about becoming a member of our dynamic Columbia
Museum of Art Docent Corps, please contact Kerry Kuhlkin-Hornsby at 343-2209 or
[email protected].
So as you can tell, the Art School is abundant and thriving! We offer wonderful
opportunities at the Museum to people of all ages, so here’s your opportunity to
find your creative self and sign up for a class, take a tour, or bring your child
(or grandchild) for an art activity. Check the calendar page or visit the Web site at
columbiamuseum.org for a complete listing of education classes and events, along
with information on membership discounts. As an integral part of the Museum, the
Art School supports the core of the Museum’s mission to inspire, educate and enrich
lives through art. And it’s fun!
